North Carolina State University offers two paths in the pursuit of Creative Writing studies. The first, for undergraduates, is an English major with a concentration or minor in Creative Writing, what the English Department totes as their most popular concentration. The second is as a graduate student in their Masters of Fine Arts program. Those who study as an undergraduate receive a background in literature and language and go on to enroll in courses poetry, fiction, screenplays, and/or non-fiction. As the only MFA in Creative Writing in an area that plays host to Duke University, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and North Carolina State, the program is able to boast a plethora of published authors. The program is small, allowing only for the acceptance of six fiction writers and six poets each year. The 36-hour program includes four workshops, four literature courses, electives and the thesis.
