U.S. News and World Report ranks the University of Iowa creative writing programs as the best in the nation. The university offers a graduate level Writers' Workshop for students to earn an M.F.A. in creative writing through a two-year residency program. Students must complete a written examination at the end of the program and a fiction or poetry manuscript at the end of each semester. Exceptional students in Iowa's English Ph.D. program sometimes get the rare opportunity to present a creative writing dissertation instead of the standard one required for that degree. The school also offers undergraduate courses and workshops in fiction, poetry and creative writing for health professionals.
