Founded in 1904, Wentworth Institute of Technology is a private, nonsectarian school in Boston with 3,800 undergraduate students. The school is a member of NASAD and accredited by CIDA. Students spend the first two years completing classes in general design, drawing, geometry, computer-aided drafting and physics. Before enrolling in junior- and senior-year professional courses, students must undergo a faculty portfolio review. All students complete at least two, one-semester cooperative employment rotations to gain work experience. The Interior Design department sponsors the Student Association for Interior Design, which organizes trips throughout the United States and Canada for architectural and museum studies.

Home to fewer than 650 students, Boston Architectural College is a private institution. About 53 percent of its students are Massachusetts residents, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The bachelor of interior design program is accredited by CIDA and lasts 13 semesters. The first phase of the program involves classes in two and three-dimensional computer-aided drafting, acoustics, mechanical and industrial design and art history and criticism. The second phase features courses in green design, textiles, lighting, furniture and construction. The final phase requires students to complete an independent project. A master of interior design program is also offered.

In 2010, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst was ranked 106th among all national universities by "U.S. News & World Report." The public college is home to more than 20,500 undergraduate students and offers a bachelor of fine arts in design program, which allows students to specialize in interior design. The program requires four years of study. Students complete six studio courses and classes in lighting, architectural history, physics, design, drawing and calculus. The university offers study-abroad programs in more than 40 countries, and all students may complete an internship for college credit if they choose.
