What Schools in Miami Offer Nursing Programs

Nursing is considered a positive career outlook, as noted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which predicts that the demand for registered nurses will grow much faster than that of other fields. Miami is an excellent city to take up the health care profession, with its dozens of area hospitals. In general, students wishing to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing will study for four years.
  1. Miami University

    • Housed within the University's School of Nursing and Health Studies, the nursing program there has trained practitioners for over 50 years on the Coral Gables main campus in Miami-Dade County. The school prepares nurses at every level with three Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs, five master's programs and two doctora-level programs that include a PhD in Nursing and a DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice). UM also boasts one of the most diverse nursing schools in the nation: It's student population is 18 percent male (as opposed to the national average of 9 percent) and trains white, black and Hispanic students in almost equal ratios.

    Miami Dade College

    • Miami Dade College bills itself as "the largest and most diverse college in the nation," with its student population nearing 200,000 and students from all over the world. Their nursing program, however, is not as diverse as others in the area, offering only practical nurse (LPN) and registered nurse (RN) programs. The two programs are offered in three tracks: Generic two-year, a "bridge option" for health care professionals seeking an RN degree and an accelerated option for degreed professionals looking to change professions. Miami Dade students have plenty of opportunities to get real-world experience, as the nursing program is offered on-site at the local Baptist Hospital.

    Barry University

    • Barry University is the pride of Miami Shores, a suburb in close proximity to downtown Miami. The University supports a comprehensive nursing division, which offers a number of programs including Registered Nurse (RN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) as well as two transitional programs: Licensed Professional Nurse (LPN) to RN and RN to BSN programs. All of the programs build on the Catholic tradition of the greater University and emphasize the caring parts of the profession (communicating with patients and community outreach) along with a traditional curriculum. Barry University also hosts a chapter of the national nursing honor society, Sigma Theta Tau International, for high-achieving students.
