Missouri Colleges With Undergraduate Degrees in Music

Missouri offers a wide range of universities and institutions of higher learning to students. There are colleges specializing in subjects ranging from theological learning to the religiously centered. Privately funded schools and state-run institutions are among the options. Many universities in Missouri offer a music major resulting in a Bachelor of Arts degree. Some colleges offer just a standard music major while others go beyond the norm, offering a music major with specialization.
  1. Missouri State University

    • Missouri State University is located in Springfield, a city in the southwestern corner of the state. Missouri State University offers undergraduate, graduate and minor degrees in music. A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music degree can be obtained and specified to vocal performance, instrumental performance, keyboard performance or composition. Majors in music education, instrumental music, vocal or choral music and musical theater are also available. The Bachelor of Arts in Music is designed for students who wish to have a liberal arts degree in conjunction with their major and requires 38 music credits. The Bachelor of Music degree is designed for students who wish to be performers or pursue graduate studies and requires 70 music credits. Missouri State University offers more than 200 music courses from which to choose, various teaching studios, a 33-station listening lab and a 12-station computer-assisted instruction classroom. Missouri State University's music program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

    University of Missouri-Columbia

    • Located toward the center of the state in the city of Columbia, the University of Missouri offers four degree options in music--Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Minor in Music and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. The Bachelor of Music is the most concentrated degree in music that the university offers. It can be specialized or focused in six areas, instrumental performance, vocal performance, keyboard performance, music theory, music composition or music history. Like Missouri State University, the Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Missouri is a broader liberal arts degree with an emphasis placed on music. In order to be admitted into the music program at the University of Missouri, students must have at least a 2.0 grade-point average and audition for the School of Music.

    University of Central Missouri

    • The University of Central Missouri is located in Warrensburg, about 60 miles southeast of Kansas City. The University of Central Missouri offers three undergraduate music degree options--Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education. The Bachelor of Music degree option may be specialized in one of four ways, including music technology, jazz to commercial music, musical performance in vocal, piano or instrumental areas and piano pedagogy. The Bachelor of Music Education can be focused on vocal or instrumental areas. Incoming freshman students interested in declaring a music major must complete a brief Theory Placement Exam during their orientation session.
