With campuses in Chicago and Evanston, Illinois, Northwestern University has produced famous graduates like Tony-Award winning actress, Heather Headley and comedian, Stephen Colbert. Faculty members are also Tony-Award winners in addition to MacArthur Fellowship recipients and members of professional societies such as the American Academy of Arts. Bienen School of Music at Northwestern, located twelve miles outside of downtown Chicago, offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in music studies and music performance. The M.M. (master of music) degree is provided with one year or two year curriculum options. The Voice Performance and Literature M.M. degree is offered as a two year program incorporating coursework, performing opportunities and weekly vocal instruction. North Park University, on the north side of Chicago, was founded by the Evangelical Covenant Church and is focused on embracing multiculturalism. The School of Music offers bachelor's and master's degree programs with a variety of performing and applied training opportunities. The school includes four choirs, concert band, orchestra and instrumental chamber ensembles, with contributions from music and nonmusic majors. There are six vocal ensembles, including the University Choir, Women's Chorale, Gospel Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Singers and Opera Workshop. The M.M. degree program in Vocal Performance places an emphasis on solo opera singing, ensemble singing and teaching. The program is also designed to prepare students for the demands of a professional singing career.

Roosevelt University, with campuses in Chicago and Schaumburg, is an independent, nonprofit institute of higher education with a commitment to social justice. The Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) at Roosevelt University is home to one of the earliest conservatories in the United States with educators comprised of professional musicians, actors and directors in the field. Alumni of the college have secured orchestra positions in places like Los Angeles, Colorado, Germany, Spain and China. Academic programs are offered in music studies, music education, composition, performance and orchestral studies. The M.M. degree in Performance offers concentrations in seventeen different areas, including vocal performance. Faculty within the Vocal Department include voice instructors, coaches and opera singers.
