Colleges With Art History Degrees

The study of art history can span from prehistoric works to contemporary pieces, and many of the programs require that you learn a foreign language. As a graduate, you can work as a conservator, art book publisher, art librarian or even a professor. While distance education in the field is becoming more prominent, you can choose from several "brick-and-mortar" institutions as well.
  1. Pennsylvania State University

    • Pennsylvania State University's Department of History is located in the Borland Building of the school's campus and features an architecture library. You can enroll in the Bachelor of Arts program and choose one of two minors: art history or architectural history. Graduate and post-graduate programs are also available. As a student, you will learn about art from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. The university's Palmer Museum of Art is home to numerous historic and contemporary art collections.

    University of Chicago

    • Established in 1902, the Art History Department is located in the Cochrane-Woods Art Center and shares a complex with the Smart Museum of Art. The department is separated into five fields: ancient art, Asian art, Islamic art, medieval and early modern art and modern and contemporary art. Each year, the graduate students produce the Chicago Art Journal, which features scholarly writing about the arts. The department also offers group workshop programs where students can liaise with faculty members and other art history colleagues.

    Columbia University

    • Columbia University offers three undergraduate degrees in the field: art history, history and theory of architecture and a combined major in art history and visual arts. Each student must also submit a senior thesis research paper to graduate. As of 2011, the graduate program has approximately 150 doctoral students and less than 100 master's program students. The department features an art history media center as well as the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery.

    Boston University

    • The Art History program at Boston University covers American, African, Asian and European works, among several others. You can also pursue a certificate in museum studies. The two student-run clubs are the Art History Association and the Graduate Student Art History Association. Both groups host guest-lecture series, take trips to art museums and help with exam preparation. The department's graduate students organize the yearly Boston University Symposium in the History of Art. Grants and assistantships are available for qualified candidates and teaching fellowships are offered to some post-master's students.
