The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business is regarded as one of the top graduate schools for business in the world. U.S. News and World Report ranked the entire program second overall for 2009 while Business Week placed it third on its list. In the area of finance, however, U.S. News placed the Wharton School at the top of the list as the best school for finance. Students graduating with an emphasis in finance go on to pursue careers with major financial firms, government agencies and banks. The program places its major emphasis on the "analytical foundations of the discipline, stressing theory and methods of analysis and making extensive use of relevant techniques of economic analysis, mathematics, and statistics," according to the school's Web site.

Second only to the Wharton School is the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Like Wharton, the Booth School consistently rates as an overall top program. U.S. News placed Booth third while Business Week actually placed it second, ahead of Wharton. In the area of finance, Booth has long been recognized as an elite program. The Booth School offers a Ph.D in the area of finance that is offered in conjunction with the school of economics. There are four primary areas of emphasis within the program. These include corporate governance, determination of security prices, regulation and management of financial institutions and how investment firms make decisions regarding investments and financing.

The Leonard N. Stern School of Business, located at New York University, was ranked third in the area of finance by U.S. News and World Report.
