Founded in 1864, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) has a rich tradition of educating Lutheran ministers. With a longstanding reputation for being on the cusp of cutting-edge innovations in education, the school was one of the first three graduate schools in the Lutheran tradition to be accredited by the American Association of Theological Schools. The school has used television and video equipment in the classroom since the 1960s and opened an evening and weekend program for educating African-American church leaders. In addition to the traditional Master of Divinity program that trains students for ministry, LTSP offers advanced degrees including a Master of Sacred Theology (STM), a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min) and the Ph.D. The Ph.D program is geared toward the study of public theology.
