Methodist Seminary Schools

The United Methodist Church (UMC) was founded in 1968 though the merging of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church. The UMC comprises 11 million members throughout the world. For those called to the ministry in the United Methodist faith, there are 13 seminaries that train students for theological roles within the church. These seminaries are a selection of those dedicated to educating future Methodist ministry. Four of these seminary schools are highlighted below.
  1. Wesley Theological Seminary

    • Wesley Theological Seminary, located in Washington, DC, is a teaching seminary offering four degrees: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts, Master of Theological Studies, and Doctor of Ministry. The Master of Divinity allows students to specialize in youth ministry, emerging ministry, urban ministry or student pastor. The Master of Arts and Master of Theological Studies offer similar specializations. For those interested in a joint degree program, students can pursue a Master of Theological Studies from Wesley and a Master of Arts degree in international peace and conflict resolution or international development from American University. Students of all denominations are admitted to study, but Methodist students have the option for additional certifications in Christian Education, Youth Ministry, Older Adult Ministry, Spiritual Formation, Music Ministry and Evangelism.

    United Theological Seminary

    • United Theological Seminary, in Dayton, Ohio, offers several graduate degree programs in a seminary setting. Students can pursue a Master of Divinity with emphasis in church renewal, care giving or African American and black studies. There are also Master of Arts options available in care giving and liturgical ministries. Other degree programs are a Master of Theological Studies and a Doctor of Ministry Program. United Theological Seminary also offers an in-context Master of Divinity program in partnership with West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia. Students may also take courses for certification in classes for United Methodist Church certification in Christian Education Ministry, Children's Ministry, Music Ministry, Older Adult Ministry, Spiritual Formation Ministry and Youth Ministry.

    Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary

    • Located in Chicago near Northwestern University, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary offers five degree programs. The Master of Arts, Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry programs are designed for students interested in pursuing careers in the ministry, in congregations or in community leadership and service. The Master of Theological Studies and Doctor of Philosophy programs are primarily for students interested in teaching, research and leadership in the church, colleges and universities. There are also a number of nondegree educational options, including United Methodist certification programs.

    St. Paul School of Theology

    • St. Paul School of Theology has two locations: the main campus in Kansas City, Missouri, and a satellite campus affiliated with Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The school offers four degrees at its Kansas City campus: Doctor of Ministry, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts and Master of Arts in Christian Ministry. Only the Master of Divinity is offered at the Oklahoma site. St. Paul also offers graduate-level certification classes in youth ministry, evangelism, spiritual formation and Christian education. Students are expected to integrate their classroom education with practical experience in a local church setting.
