The Largest Black Colleges in the US

According to the Higher Education Act of 1965, a black college is defined as any institution of higher learning whose principal mission is the education of African-Americans. Since their establishment, these institutions have made remarkable and constant support to the general welfare and academic prosperity of the United States. According to the White House Office of the Press Secretary, there are currently 105 designated historically black colleges in the United States which serve over a quarter million undergraduate and graduate students each year.
  1. Florida A&M

    • Founded in 1890 in Tallahassee, Florida A&M offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university is also distinct among American universities as a doctoral research institute. Florida A&M's sprawling 422-acre hilltop campus is home to students from all over the United States as well as India, the Netherlands, China and Brazil. The school's most popular undergraduate programs are architecture, journalism and computer science. Its largest graduate programs are pharmaceutical sciences and public health.

    Texas Southern University

    • Texas Southern University is located in the heart of Houston's historic Third Ward district and home to nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Texas Southern is also home to the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, lauded three consecutive times as the nation's most diverse law school by U.S. News and World Report magazine. In conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the school also operates a center for Bionanotechnology and Environmental Research.

    Tennessee State University

    • Tennessee State University, located in the state's capital at Nashville, has been ranked as one of America's best universities by U.S. News and World Report magazine for 13 consecutive years. TSU offers 45 bachelor degree programs and 24 master's degree programs, as well as doctorates in seven areas of study including biological sciences and computer information systems engineering. The school's 500-acre residential campus is comprised of 65 buildings including the Young Poultry Research Plant and TSU Performing Arts Center.
