Employment of dental assisting professionals is expected to grow 36 percent through 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average salary for these professionals in 2010 ranged from $37,000 to $44,000 in several U.S. cities, according to the Economic Research Institute. Multiple colleges teach students the technical skills they need to become orthodontic assistants.

The program provides an introduction to the orthodontic profession and offers training in basic orthodontic procedures, pre-clinical skills, orthodontic practice management, and personal development. Students in the program also complete a clinical internship experience. To get into this four-week program, students must have attended a dental assisting program in which they completed at least 160 hours of training, or they must have worked at least a year in a dental office. The school opened its doors in 2006 and is a member of the Louisiana Career College Association.

    Greater Hartford Orthodontic Assistant Training Academy

    • The Greater Hartford Orthodontic Assistant Training Academy in Wethersfield, Connecticut, also offers a training program in orthodontic assisting.     Orthodontic Assistant School of Atlanta

    • The Orthodontic Assistant School of Atlanta in Duluth, Georgia, offers an orthodontic assistant training program that provides 64 hours of instruction. Classes cover topics such as study models and wax bites, pouring/trimming models, sterilization and infection control, archwire selection, and x-ray techniques. Students also learn about orthodontic appliances, bracket identification and cementation. All classes take place on Saturdays for eight weeks to accommodate working students and take place in an orthodontic office.
