The process of becoming a certified teacher in Chicago involves attending an accredited college or university to receive your bachelor's degree, followed by passing state exams in order to receive your teaching certificate.   1. National-Louis University

    • National-Louis University (NLU) started out as National Teacher's College, with programming exclusive to teacher education students. Since then, NLU has branched out to provide educational programming in other areas but continues to offer a variety of programs for the education major. The school offers undergraduate degrees in early childhood education and elementary education, which lead to Type 04 and Type 03 certificates. NLU uses a cohort teaching model, which means you stay with the same group of 12 to 20 students throughout your student experience. According to National-Louis, graduates like the cohort teaching model because of the support and friendships provided by other students in the program. NLU offers an extensive graduate degree program with nine teacher education programs and three education administration programs.

    Chicago State University

    • Chicago State University offers undergraduate programs in elementary and secondary education, leading to Type 03 or Type 09 certification. Additionally, the school has a four-year program in early childhood education, which leads the student to a Type 04 certification. Chicago State University provides a core curriculum with a strong foundation in teacher-specific classes as well as general education. Aside from basic elementary, secondary and early childhood education programs, Chicago State University offers 16 other teacher education programs including such programs as physical education, six different subject-specific secondary education programs, bilingual elementary education and technology education. Chicago State University supports teaching students with six different Academic Support Units. One such unit is the Office of Field Placement, an office that works closely with the Illinois State Board of Education to find, select and monitor places for the student to complete their field experience, often referred to as student teaching.     University of Illinois at Chicago

    • The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) provides a four-year program in elementary education and leads to a Type 03 certification in the state of Illinois. UIC's elementary education program involves the academic programming you would expect to receive, providing a strong foundation in methods of teaching, core subject areas, and education and child psychology classes. The school places special emphasis upon teaching students who are minorities or from low-income families. UIC has a strong urban-based curriculum that prepares teachers to teach students with some of the unique needs they face in the city.
