Classes to Take to Become a Teacher

Being a teacher at an elementary, middle school or high school generally requires getting a four-year bachelor's degree and completing a certified two-year or three-year education program. College teachers often require master's or doctorate degrees.

Teaching a skill or trade may only require experience and relevant licensing or certifications. Check the requirements for teaching in your state.
  1. Choosing a College

    • If you know where you want to teach, what subjects you want to teach and what level you want to teach at, it becomes easier to make the best college choice for your needs. States have different requirements, so it's often a good idea to complete your education in the same state you want to teach in, and research the specific requirements of some of the schools you'd like to teach at. Ask principals and teachers at those schools for recommendations and advice. Find out where they completed their post-secondary education.

    Bachelor's Programs

    • Look at the entrance requirements for the education program you wish to apply for. Most require that you have a bachelor's degree and will specify a minimum GPA. Check to see if the bachelor's degree you're going for will be acceptable for acceptance into the education program.

The bachelor's program you choose should be directly related to the subjects you wish to teach, unless you plan on being an elementary teacher. In that case, you can pursue a general liberal arts degree or another broadly defined program.

    Education Programs

    • Post-bachelor degree education programs to prepare elementary, junior high and high school teachers include classes on how to develop curriculum, plan classes, relate to children, teach effectively, build rapport with parents and other teachers, evaluate student performance and do self-evaluation, understand student learning and growth issues and provide testing and constructive feedback.
