At the Academy of Art University, students can take interior design courses to earn a bachelor of fine art degree. In the residential decoration course, students work to develop their own design aesthetic. They learn how to choose the right fabrics, furnishings and final touches, like decorative pieces, antiques and outdoor furniture to customize a residence or business. Courses are held one day a week for three hours. Students have to be enrolled in the university to take the residential decoration class. The BFA interior design program requires a total of 132 units to graduate and this class is worth three units.

In this interior design class, students learn how to initiate a lighting plan. This course gives the student information on adjustable lighting, recessed lighting, LED lighting and more. The course also gives insight into how to interpret lighting manufacturers' literature on installation. The three-hour course is $135 and is open to members of the public through New York School of Interior Design’s Institute for Continuing and Professional Studies.

In the bathroom design course at the University of California, Berkeley Extension, interior design students learn the basic skills to revitalize a bathroom. Topics covered include the proper layout of a bathroom, the space needed for oversized bathtubs, showers and vanities, as well as how to choose the right fixtures. Other topics include how to select materials for a bathroom, how to create design drawings and how to come up with the initial vision for a client. The three-hour class runs for eight sessions at a cost of $500. The course is open to the public.
