Colleges in Chicago That Offer Kinesiology

Kinesiology studies human movement, and people who study kinesiology focus on the relationship between a fit, healthy body and quality of life. Exercise science applies the theories of kinesiology to promote fitness, wellness and optimal human performance. Chicago has several schools that offer degrees in exercise science and kinesiology.

    • The University of Illinois at Chicago offers a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with concentrations in movement science and exercise and movement, and a Master of Science with concentrations in applied exercise physiology, exercise biology, and motor control and learning. It also offers a doctorate in kinesiology, nutrition and rehabilitation with emphases in motor control and musculoskeletal biomechanics, integrative pathophysiology, nutrition and health promotion, and rehabilitation sciences. The bachelor’s degree program gives students an opportunity to participate in Independent study, a senior research seminar and a summer research fellowship.

    Northeastern Illinois University

    • Northeastern Illinois University offers a Master of Science in Exercise Science. Students pursuing the master’s degree can pursue either a thesis or a non-thesis option in their fields of concentration. The fitness and wellness concentration prepares students for careers in allied health fields, fitness industries and strength training and conditioning. The human performance concentration prepares them for careers such as adaptive physical education, athletic training and physical education.

    Concordia University Chicago

    • Concordia University Chicago, in the suburb of River Forest, a 20-minute drive from the city, offers a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science. Classes are small to facilitate hands-on learning. The program encourages student internships, and past internship sites include AthletiCo Physical Therapy, Accelerated Physical Therapy, Advocate Health Care, Borg-Warner Fitness Center, Cardinal Fitness and the Chicago Park District.

    • North Central College, 46 minutes from Chicago in Naperville, offers a Bachelor of Art in Exercise Science. Students can complete internships in health clubs, corporate wellness centers, performance enhancement centers and group exercise programs. Cardinal Athletic Training Students, a campus organization open to students majoring in athletic training and allied health professions, invites speakers to campus, plans visits to other athletic training or sports medicine facilities and serves as a networking source.
