Since being founded in Champaign-Urbana, the University of Illinois at Chicago has educated college students at its Harrison and Halsted campus since 1961. The urban school offers students kinesiology programs in its College of Applied Health Sciences. Students can major in kinesiology for both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree.

North Central College, located in Naperville, Illinois, has a Bachelor of Arts degree in the study of exercise science. The college, which was founded in 1861, is located 28 miles from downtown Chicago and features over 2,000 undergraduate students, almost half of which commute. Students at North Central will take courses that include clinical experiences to gain real world knowledge of the subject at hand.

Concordia University, located in River Forest, Illinois, was founded in 1864 by the Lutheran church. Concordia enrolls over 1,200 undergraduate students and is located just 10 miles from downtown Chicago. Students are offered a Bachelor of Arts program in exercise science as well as an option to minor in the study. A major in exercise science includes 32 semester hours of work while a minor requires 22 semester hours of study.
