Maine Medical Center is located in Portland, Maine. Maine Medical Center offers a nurse assistant program which is a daytime program that lasts 11 weeks, or 200 hours. The program is comprised of both lecture and hands-on learning that occur Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m to 2 p.m. Topics covered in the course include patient safety, infection control, communication skills, nutrition and hygiene care, as well as CPR and Basic Life Support. To be considered for the class, you must attend the program's information session, as well as not be convicted of theft or abuse in a hospital setting. You must also have completed high school or have a GED. Students who complete the program are eligible to sit for the state license exam.

Southern Maine Community College is located in South Portland, Maine, which is about ten minutes south of Portland. SMCC has a 10 week nurse assistant program that fully prepares students for Maine's CNA exam. Flexible day and evening classes are available to fit students' schedules. Students learn a variety of nursing skills, from proper patient nutrition to beside care like taking vital signs or keeping patients company. To qualify for acceptance into the program at SMCC, you must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

Portland Arts and Technology High Schools offers a health science career program for high school students. The program is two years long and students study subjects such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition and medical terminology. Students take part in field trips and research projects covering various subjects of health science. This program meets Maine's requirements to allow students to sit for the state nurse assistant exam. You must be a student at this high school in order to qualify for the program.
