Michigan Broadcasting Schools

Starting a career in broadcasting, whether on television or the radio, requires specific training. Many universities, community colleges, and specialized technical training schools offer classes and degrees in broadcasting. Students in Michigan who are interested in pursuing a broadcasting degree will find a variety of school options that range from diploma programs to bachelor's and master's degrees.
  1. Specs Howard School of Media Arts

    • The Specs Howard School of Media Arts offers students a radio, video and film diploma option. Students may choose either a 17 to 32 week radio intensive curriculum, or a 17 to 32 week dual radio and film/video option. All students who enter the program must complete a 16 week introduction that includes coursework in radio, film, and video. The RVF curriculum includes both on-air and behind-the-scenes training. Many classes may transfer to associate's or bachelor's degree programs.

    Oakland Community College

    • The Oakland Community College offers an associate's degree in broadcast arts technology in conjunction with the Specs Howard School of Media Arts. This program is restricted to students who are enrolled in, and earn a diploma from, Specs Howard. Eighteen credits from the Specs Howard radio, video and film diploma program can be applied toward an associate's degree at Oakland Community College. Students must take an additional 44 credits in subjects such as English, math, science, fine arts and social science for a total of 62 credits.

    Adrian College

    • Mchigan's Adrian College offers a bachelor's degree program in communication arts and sciences. Its media arts program allows students to participate in courses such as broadcast operations, directing, TV and radio announcing, and broadcast theory. Additionally, students may DJ on the local campus radio station K-9 Radio.

    Central Michigan University: School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts

    • Central Michigan University's School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts gives students interested in entering a career in the media arts field the opportunity to study at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Areas include electronic media management, production and more. In addition to courses in broadcasting and media, students may elect to participate in internship and assistance activities at the school's 13,000 watt HD radio station WMHW-FM or the local community cable television channel MHTV. Students interested in professional networking may want to join the school's chapters of the National Broadcasters Society/Alpha Epsilon Rho or the American Women in Radio and Television.
