List of Private Colleges in Georgia

The Southern state of Georgia has a number of different private colleges for those seeking higher education. Though private school higher education may cost slightly more, many feel the smaller class size and higher prestige offered by a quality private college is worth it. Many of Georgia's private colleges are considered to be among the best in the nation.
  1. Savannah College of Art and Design

    • Located in Savannah, the Savannah College of Art and Design is a private liberal arts college specializing in degrees in artistic majors. The college was founded in 1978, with the first classes being held in 1979. SCAD, as it is known, offers degrees in subjects such as theatre, art, and film. SCAD also awards master's degrees in several of the programs. The student body of SCAD consists of more than 9,500 students from around the country and across the globe.

    Berry College

    • Berry College is a private college in Mount Berry, Ga. Founded in 1902, Berry College is listed on U.S. News and World Report's rundown of America's best colleges. The college also holds membership in the Annapolis Group, a group of the best independent liberal arts colleges in the United States. The college campus has the distinction of being the largest contiguous college campus in the world at over 26,000 acres. The student body consists of just under 2,000 students, both undergraduate and graduate.

    Emory University

    • U.S. News and World Report ranks Emory University 17th in the nation on the 2010 edition of their best American colleges list. This school was founded in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. As of fall 2009, the school's student body was composed of nearly 13,000 enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. Emory comprises nine different colleges, as well as several graduate schools for programs including law, medicine, and nursing.

    Piedmont College

    • Piedmont College is a small, private liberal arts college with just over 2,000 students enrolled. The college is located in Demorest, Ga., which is located about 70 miles north of Atlanta. There are 38 undergraduate programs available at Piedmont, as well as graduate programs in education and business and an education doctoral program.

    Wesleyan College

    • Wesleyan College has the distinction of being the first college in the world to award bachelor's degrees to women. The school was founded in 1836 by the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and some Macon citizens, with classes beginning in 1839. There are thirty different areas of study at Wesleyan, all offering a Bachelor of Arts. Wesleyan also offers several master's degrees. The Wesleyan graduate program enrolls both men and women, unlike the women-only undergraduate studies. The student body of Wesleyan is made up of just over 600 undergraduates and about 81 graduate students.
