The Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is ranked as the second best overall communications department according to the College Crunch rankings. While the No. 1 overall school, Penn, offers just a PhD program at its graduate school, Syracuse has 12 different master's degree programs in its highly competitive graduate school. The Newhouse School partners with the local media to keep its students on top of the most current trends and also partners with other colleges on campus to develop collaborative master's degree options for its students. Master's students combine with the university's Maxwell School of Public Affairs in the documentary film master's curriculum, and students work through the Newhouse School combined with the Whitman School of Management to earn the media management master's. Pepperdine University's Seaver College Communication Division is a top 10 overall communications program according to College Crunch, and the school has a a particularly strong master's degree program. Pepperdine has two different approaches to the master's degree and offers an accelerated master's degree program. The university's master of arts degree program is research based and is designed to prepare students for moving ahead to doctoral programs, while the master of science degree track allows students to focus on one area of career focus to give the added preparation for heading into the workforce upon completion of the master's degree.

The school uses curriculum that focuses on interpersonal communications as well as media as it deals with the world and politics.
