Psychology Grad School Programs

Advanced training from a psychology grad school program includes opportunities for master's degrees, Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) and clinical Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degrees. Many specialties within psychology grad school departments, such as clinical and counseling psychology, health psychology and industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology just to name a few. Acceptance into graduate psychology programs is extremely competitive, with many universities receiving hundreds of applicants while only formally accepting anywhere from ten to fifty or so candidates depending on the school.

Students choose from one of several programs: industrial/organizational psychology, cognitive, applied social, perceptual and brain sciences, or CSU's APA-accredited counseling psychology program. Colorado State's graduate school also operates one of only two occupational health psychology training programs in the United States hosted by a Mountains and Plains Education and Research Center (MAPERC). Students train and study in the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research and the Institute of Applied Prevention Research, which focus on topics like community readiness, youth violence, as well as suicide and school violence prevention. Colorado state residents pay around $8,000 for full-time yearly tuition while non-residents pay around $19,000 according to the school's financial services website.

    The Chicago School of Professional Psychology

    • The Chicago School is a nonprofit psychology graduate school that offers programs at their central location in Chicago, Illinois, and at other locations throughout the country in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Orange Counties in California. This graduate program primarily focuses on applied psychology and trains clinicians in the areas of clinical and forensic psychology, educational and business psychology. The school offers master's degrees as well as both the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and an APA-accredited Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). Specialty sub-fields students can choose include Latino mental health, addictions and exercise psychology. The Chicago School allows students to "tailor" their learning experience by customizing coursework and choosing flexible schedules that include both evening/weekend and blended online options. Tuition, as of August 2009 according to the school's website, stands at $855 per credit hour for master's programs and $1070 per credit hour for PsyD and PhD programs.

    George Fox University

    • Located in Newberg, Oregon, George Fox University trains students as psychology practitioners and offers the clinical Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree, which is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. George Fox University is a Christian University and, as such, uses a holistic approach in its training program. Students learn to integrate the Christian faith with their studies and hands-on training, eventually becoming specialists in dealing with the psychological aspects of religious issues. Graduate students pay $740 in tuition per credit hour for the 2010-11 academic year.

    Syracuse University

    • The psychology grad school program at Syracuse University contains four major sections, including clinical psychology, experimental, school and social psychology. The university bases its clinical and school psychology PhD degree programs on the Boulder scientist-practitioner model of psychology. In addition, both the clinical and school psychology programs receive full accreditation by the American Psychological Association. Areas in which students can specialize include cognitive aging, health and behavior and the causes and consequences of social challenges. Yearly full-time tuition listed on Syracuse University's website for the 2010-11 school year stands at around $20,000.
