Colleges With Good Professional Golf Management Programs

For students interested in combining a love of golf with a full-time career, a degree in professional golf management could be a perfect fit. Most programs result in a bachelor's degree. Professional golf management programs usually take four and a half to five years to complete including summers. Students learn the basics of management, hospitality and golf coaching skills. All of the the best professional golf management programs are part of the PGA Golf Management University Program accredited by The PGA of America. There are 20 such accredited colleges.
  1. Arizona State University

    • Arizona State University offers a golf management concentration within its agribusiness degree program. This is a four-year program that provides a business degree for students with aspirations of working in golf management or as Class A PGA professionals. Students play in numerous golf tournaments and volunteer at tournaments. The program is monitored by three PGA professionals including a master professional who is certified in general management. All PGM students must complete the agribusiness core program as well as a minimum of 23 semester hours of golf-related curriculum. Students spend nine semester hours in hands-on internships. The other 14 hours consist of coursework in areas such as sports psychology, golf course operations, pro shop merchandising, turf grass management, club fitting and repair, and movement analysis. Students in this program also have to complete all requirements of the PGA education curriculum including the Playing Ability Test.

    Clemson University

    • Clemson University offers a golf management concentration through its parks, recreation, and tourism management degree program. Clemson only admits 20 to 25 students into the program each year. Students in this program also earn a minor in business administration. There is an emphasis on teaching skills in this program. Students also complete numerous hours of training in customer relations and human behavior. Clemson University also offers a player development program designed to assist students in passing the PAT. This program features an emphasis on environmental aspects of the golf industry.

    Ferris State University

    • Ferris State University, located in Big Rapids, Michigan, has the country's oldest PGA accredited program. This program was established in 1975. Students begin their education in golf management in their freshman year. This is a four and a half year program. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree in business with a marketing major. Coursework in this program includes public relations, golf course maintenance, club fitting and repair, and teaching skills. Students also complete five semesters of internships at PGA facilities or in administrative roles within PGA affiliates.
