College Music Education Programs

A wide range of colleges throughout the United States offer programs in music education. These programs are for gifted musicians who want to instruct the next generation. Most programs require that applicants audition in addition to completing the standard application packet for the college; check the college websites for details.
  1. Northwestern University

    • Northwestern University offers degrees in music education through its Bienen School of Music in Evanston, Illinois, 12 miles north of downtown Chicago. Degrees include Bachelor of Music, Master of Music Education, Master of Music Education and String Pedagogy, Master of Music Education and Piano Pedagogy and a doctorate. The Bienen School enrolls about 400 undergraduates and 200 graduate students, a small fraction of Northwestern's 16,000-student total enrollment. In 2009-2010, tuition and fees averaged about $38,000. "U.S. News and World Report" puts Northwestern No. 12 in its 2010 rankings of national universities.

    University of Florida

    • Students at the University of Florida in Gainesville can pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in music education through the school's College of Fine Arts. The university, which occupies the No. 47 spot in the "U.S. News" rankings, is a public school with an enrollment of about 33,500 undergraduates and 13,000 graduate students. According to College Explorer, the average cost of attendance is $4,373 for in-state students and $23,744 for out-of-state students as of 2010.

    Boston University

    • Students at private, non-sectarian Boston University's College of Fine Arts have both undergraduate and graduate degree options, including Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Master of Music in Music Education and Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education. Ranked No. 56 by "U.S. News," BU boasts an enrollment of just over 32,550 students, about half of whom are undergraduates. Campus Explorer reports that tuition and fees cost just under $40,000.

    The University of Colorado at Boulder

    • The University of Colorado at Boulder earned the No. 77 spot in the "U.S. News" rankings. The university as a whole has about 30,000 students, including 5,000 graduate students; the College of Music enrolls about 350 undergraduate students and 200 grad students. Music education degrees include Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music Education, Master of Music Education Plus Licensure and Doctor of Music Education. In-state students can expect tuition and fees to run $7,400 per year; out-of-state students can expect to pay about $36,750.
