Music Education Master's Programs

Many top music schools and conservatories offer master's degree programs in music education and pedagogy. These programs typically require one or two years of full-time study to complete. Students can supplement their music education curriculum with courses in applied music and performance. Music education degree holders go on to careers as music teachers, professors, historians, performers or arts organizers and administrators.
  1. University of Rochester Eastman School of Music

    • The University of Rochester Eastman School of Music, a music conservatory within a research university, was founded in 1921. The school offers Master of Arts (MA) degrees in Music Education and Music Theory Pedagogy in collaboration with the University of Rochester Division of Graduate Research Studies.

      These degree programs require at least two semesters of full-time coursework to complete. The programs emphasize research and writing. Students in the music education program can choose to complete a thesis or a field project. All MA students can take performance courses on an instrument of their choice.

    Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

    • Indiana University founded its School of Music, now called the Jacobs School of Music, in 1921. The school offers a Master of Music Education (MME) degree program that spans music theory, research and practice.

      Students can specialize in choral, general, band or orchestra education. Master's students can apply to continue in the department's Doctor of Music Education (DME) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs.

    Northwestern University Bienen School of Music

    • Northwestern University founded its Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music in 1895. As of 2009, the school had about 210 graduate students. The school offers a variety of master's degree programs in music education. Students can earn a Master of Music Education (MME) degree in one full-time academic year or four summers.

      Students without prior teacher certification can earn both the master's degree and certification in two full-time years. Students can also work toward more specialized music education degrees, such as the Master of Music Education and Piano Pedagogy, Master of Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Master of Music Education and String Pedagogy or Master of String Performance and Pedagogy.
