Distance Education: Music Master's Degrees

Participation in an online master's in music does have its advantages. You can study at your own pace, and turn in exercises via computer. Programs usually require the same number of credit hours as a traditional degree, between 30 and 36. The classwork is usually accelerated, and you must have the necessary equipment, such as musical software, as well as web cameras with microphones to communicate with your teachers.

    • The Boston University School of Music offer master's degrees and Ph.D.'s online. You can complete a master's degree in 17-20 months. The Ph.D. program requires a 24-month commitment. The school takes applications five times a year for master's programs, and only once per year for a Ph.D. You submit all your classwork online. You can receive recordings of lectures online, allowing you to view them at your convenience.

    Liberty University

    • Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, in Lynchburg, Va., has an online Master's of Arts in Worship Studies program, with specialization in Ethnomusicology. The goal of this program is to prepare you as a church worship leader to better serve your local church community. You will receive research training and tools to adapt to a variety of worship cultures within the Christian community. Your teacher will send you a detailed syllabus each week. This college is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

    Hugh A. Glauser School of Music

    • Kent State University's Hugh A. Glauser School Music offers master's of music, master's of arts and Ph.D degrees. For the master's of music performance degree, the college offers majors in Conducting, Music Education and Music Performance. For the master's of arts, you have the options of majoring in composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, or theory. As of 2011, the only Ph.D. option is music theory and composition.

    University of Nebraska at Kearney

    • The University of Nebraska at Kearney's online graduate music program requires specific software and computer capabilities, and can be pursued on either a PC or Mac. The core curriculum includes music theory and music history/literature. You must earn three credit hours through research, along with 18 hours of music education. You must take six hours of electives in performance pedagogy, along with six more hours of additional electives.
