The Master of Arts in Education offers a more theoretical study of education than other advanced degree options. This degree allows an educator to specialize in one of several fields, in addition to taking core classes in educational philosophy, child psychology and education research methods.
The Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT) is designed for those who do not currently hold teacher certification, such as those changing careers. This degree leads to initial certification and a master's degree for students who already hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Students pursuing a Master of Science in Education (MS) typically already have a bachelor's degree and currently work in the education field, often as teachers. This degree provides specialist knowledge and is generally pursued by those interested in senior positions within education.
The Master of Education (MEd) helps experienced educators increase their professional and academic knowledge and skills in a specific area of emphasis, such as science, technology or language arts.
Although not one of the typical degrees, the Harvard Graduate School of Education offers the Arts in Education (AIE) degree, a 1-year master's program for educators who are interested in creating their own arts-related courses of study. Students in the AIE program focus their interest on visual art, writing, drama, dance, music and film.
