Types of AA Degrees

The Associate of Arts (AA) is a college degree that typically requires 60 credit hours to complete. It usually takes about two years to complete and typically consists of general education, major requirements and elective courses. While the Associate of Science (AS) degree focuses more on science or technical disciplines, AA degrees tend to emphasize the humanities and the arts. AA degrees are also more likely transferable toward a bachelor's degree, while AS degrees are less so, and the career-based Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees are stand-alone and non-transferable.
  1. AA Degree in General Studies

    • As its name suggests, this AA degree emphasizes the general education requirements that go toward a bachelor's degree, which may include history, English, math, science, philosophy and other courses. This degree usually offers the student a well-rounded covering of the basics so students can focus their future studies on a declared major. This degree is best suited for students who plan to continue toward a bachelor's degree, or students who are yet undecided as to a major.

Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts

    • This AA degree is similar to the General Studies degree in that it covers many general education requirements, but with more of a focus on the creative arts and humanities. Subjects covered often include religion, philosophy, music, English composition and oral communication, among other topics. The design of the degree is for transfer to a four-year college, equipping students with the general education requirements needed for liberal or creative arts majors, and is optimal for those students who lean toward such majors.

    Specialized AA degrees

    • For students who have decided on a major, many two-year colleges will offer an AA degree that focuses study on that particular field. However, unlike the career-based Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees available for such majors, the AA versions are transferable toward a bachelor's degree. Examples of these field-specific AA degrees can include communications, early childhood education, criminal justice, business administration, history, psychology and social sciences. These degrees vary by school, so students should check with their prospective college to see if it offers a transferable AA degree in the desired major.
