Types of Elementary Education Degrees Online

Online colleges and universities offer a variety of elementary education degrees on the undergraduate and graduate levels. Online Bachelor's programs lead to a standard Class A teaching certificate which qualifies candidates to be classroom teachers. Teachers then have the option to pursue a Master's or Specialist degree in elementary education. They can earn these degrees online or by attending a traditional university campus. Graduate degrees enable teachers to earn advanced certification and higher salaries.
  1. Teaching

    • Most online elementary degrees are programs that qualify graduates for Class A teaching certification. These degrees are intended to prepare students to be classroom teachers in grades kindergarten through sixth in public and private schools. Students learn how to implement a curriculum in all subject areas through direct instruction, lesson preparation, assessment, and observation. Students earn either a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) or B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree.

Undergraduates can continue their education online or attend a university and earn a Master's degree in elementary education. This advanced degree requires intensive coursework (approximately 30 hours) on the graduate level. Many classroom teachers begin work on this degree to meet state licensing requirements for continuing education.

A completed Master's degree leads to AA certification and AAA certification for those with a specialist's degree. A, AA, and AAA designate the education and salary level of the license holder. A person with AAA certification earns more annually than those with AA and A. All three license types are valid for five years.

    Specialist

    • There are several types of elementary education Specialist degrees available online. This degree will qualify a teacher for AAA certification. For people who already have a Master's degree, a Specialist degree requires up to 30 hours of coursework that includes study in early childhood and upper elementary education, research and curriculum, and special education. Online programs like Delta State University in Mississippi require that students already have a teaching license when they enroll.

    Administrative

    • Online colleges also offer programs in educational leadership and administration with an emphasis on elementary education. These degrees are usually offered on the graduate level. Students are required to take administrative classes designed to prepare them for the positions of principal, assistant principal, curriculum supervisor, or lead teacher in an elementary school.
