GED High School Diploma Programs

The General Educational Development Test, or GED, is a U.S. high school equivalency test covering reading, writing, sciences, social studies and mathematics. The American Council on Education, or ACE, developed the GED. Most colleges and employers accept it as the equivalent of a high school diploma, so a major function of the GED is giving adult learners a means to continue their education and professional development. ACE stresses that the GED cannot be taken online, but suggests several study aids to prepare for the test.
  1. GED Connection

    • GED Connection is a production of Literacy Link, which is a partnership between PBS, KET Adult Learning, the National Center for Adult Literacy and the Kentucky Department of Education. It utilizes various media to give adult learners a thorough understanding of the GED's 5 subjects. Included in the system are three workbooks, 39 half-hour videos which air on public television, and various internet activities and quizzes to provide instant feedback on student performance.

Steck Vaughan Adult Education GED Preparation Books

    • An array of print media exists to prepare students for the GED, but the only workbooks officially endorsed by ACE as of 2010 come from Steck Vaughan Adult Education. Steck Vaughan is a subsidiary of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. It produces several GED preparation books. Each of the 5 books in its Keys to GED Success series details a GED subject. Complete GED Preparation goes over the whole test, and it includes over 2,000 practice questions. Steck Vaughan also produces Spanish language preparation books, and it's the exclusive supplier of complete practice GED tests.

    GED Plus

    • For learners who want the flexibility of internet coursework, ACE recommends the Paxen Group's GED Plus program. Paxen offers one-week or two-week intensive classes. Before beginning the program, students take tests to find out what areas they need to study the most. Based on test results, the company develops individualized curricula for each student.

    Local GED Classes

    • According to ACE, GED classes are available nationally through community colleges and adult learning centers. Its Website includes a section entitled “GED Preparation Contacts by State,” which compiles contact information for regional GED test preparation coordinators in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It can help you find GED preparation courses in your area.

    Sample Questions and Tests

    • The ACE Website offers various sample questions to help potential test-takers determine their areas of strength and weakness. This is an important place to start, so that all studying can be targeted in areas that need it. ACE also offers complete practice tests to help you determine when you are ready for the test. Practice tests are available exclusively through Steck Vaughan Adult Education.
