The primary function of a student code of conduct is to identify specific behavior that is expected of all students. The code will identify behavior that is not acceptable, and explain the penalties and sanctions students are subject to for inappropriate behavior. Students have the right to expect that all school district rules and disciplinary actions will be applied consistently and fairly. Students and parents have the right to expect a fair and transparent hearing for grievances and accusations.
Students should not take any action against another student or against any teacher or staff member that could cause injury, or fear of injury. Actions that cause injury, whether done purposely or in jest, undermine the sense of safety and security that should be part of a student's educational experience. Stalking is a pattern of harassment or threats that cause a student to live in fear of harm or injury. Any action that causes real or imagined danger is a violation of the code of conduct.
Students are not to bring dangerous weapons to school for any purpose. Dangerous weapons include any firearm that sends out a projectile when discharged, including BB guns and pellet guns. Elementary and secondary students are not to bring any knives to school, including decorative swords and cutlery. All explosive devices are prohibited, including fireworks and any device that would discharge a hazardous chemical. Students who bring weapons or dangerous devices to school are subject to immediate expulsion.
Students are expected to abstain from any conduct in the classroom that would be considered cheating, or from falsely claiming the work of other students as their own. Students who turn in research papers claiming the original work of others as their own are guilty of plagiarism, and will receive a failing grade on plagiarized work. Students who conspire with other students or staff members to falsify or alter any record or official document will be subject to the strongest sanctions allowed by district regulations.
American public schools are made up of a very diverse student population. Every student has the right to be treated with respect and dignity. Students should voluntarily refrain from inappropriate language and any act of discrimination. Discrimination includes unwanted physical hazing, inappropriate comments and jokes, and actions that are designed to prevent access to academic opportunities and athletic activities. Students should not be deprived of the right to join any after school club or extracurricular activity they are qualified for.
