The UCLA Student Code of Conduct

The Office of the Dean of Students at University of California Los Angeles notes that integrity, excellence, accountability, and respect are the cores values that serve as the foundation for the Student Code of Conduct. Documents provided by the Dean's Office outline the expectations and regulations, and possible sanctions for student conduct at UCLA. These guidelines are available to all students and community members in printed and electronic format.
  1. Definitions

    • The first section of the UCLA Student Code of Conduct offers definitions of the following terms: student, notice, days, Hearing Coordinator, Hearing Officer and Dean. These are legal definitions as they apply to the rules and regulations outlined in the UCLA Student Code of Conduct document. A UCLA student is an individual for whom the university maintains records and who is registered and enrolled in an academic program at the University.

    Types of Misconduct

    • The UCLA Student Code of Conduct offers definitions for 29 specific types of misconduct. These acts of misconduct include academic dishonesty,computer misconduct, theft, harassment, hazing, use of controlled substances, and acts of violence, including sexual assault and physical abuse. Students and members of the UCLA community are expected to familiarize themselves with these regulations regarding misconduct.

    Discipline Procedures

    • According to the Student Code of Conduct, an individual who violates the Code of Conduct or commits an act of misconduct will be referred to the Dean of Student's Office for disciplinary action. Once this referral is made, a variety of actions may be taken. If a student admits culpability for an offense, the Dean's Office will take appropriate actions such a suspension or dismissal from UCLA. If a student does not admit culpability, the issue will be referred to the Student Conduct Committee and a hearing will take place. The Student Conduct Committee hears evidence regarding the misconduct and, if appropriate, assigns sanctions.

    Sanctions

    • According to the UCLA Student Code of Conduct, sanctions for misconduct can include community service, restitution warning or censure, disciplinary probation, and suspension or dismissal from the university. Students can also lose privileges for participation in activities and may be excluded from certain parts of campus. Each act of misconduct has a specific sanction or set of sanctions that the Student Conduct Committee can elect to impose on an offending student, but the Student Conduct Committee must have sufficient evidence that the sanction is warranted.

    Student Conduct Committee

    • The Student Conduct Committee is composed of a chair who is a member of the UCLA faculty who has training in law or arbitration of disputes. In addition to the chair, there are three faculty members and two members of the UCLA staff. No fewer than two members of the UCLA undergraduate community and no fewer than two members of the UCLA graduate community must also serve on the committee. The Student Code of Conduct also specifies detailed guidelines for scheduling of hearings, hearing protocols and hearing records.
