Art Therapist Degrees

Art therapy programs are accredited by the American Art Therapy Association. Most programs are offered at the graduate level, although there are some bachelor degree offerings. Apply as a masters student, or enroll in a certificate program at any of the following schools. Students hoping to pursue a degree in Art Therapy may obtain undergraduate coursework in studio art, psychology and social work.
  1. Concordia University

    • Montreal, Quebec is where Concordia's Art Therapy program is based. Strengths of this program are its international agenda. The Concordia program combines theoretical approaches developed in Great Britain, France and the United States. They have a practicum site, The Centre for the Arts in Human Development where students develop and apply art therapy theory. The program design is closely aligned through to Drama Therapy in their Creative Arts Therapies department. Program pre-requisites include a number of credits from art studio classes and psychology coursework.

    Florida State University

    • The Art Education program at Florida State has a masters level degree, and a PHd with emphasis in Art Education, Art Therapy, and Arts Administration. Summer courses are required for this degree program. Weekend workshops are held by guest art therapists during the summer session at the Ringling School of Art and Design - Sarasota, Florida and at the Florida State University. Florida State offers a professional certificate in Arts and Community Practice for undergraduates and graduates. The certificate requires course credits in social work, as well as art studio.

    Springfield College

    • This college in Springfield, Ma. has been affiliated with the YMCA since 1885. Their work in art therapy is based on a commitment to public health and wellness. The art education undergraduate program offers an emphasis on art therapy, and is designed for those who are planning to pursue a graduate degree in Art Therapy. Their graduate program synthesizes art therapy, psychology, development of the student's creative skills, and research methodology. The development of a total person in body, mind, and spirit is emphasized at Springfield, as it is for the YMCA.

    Marylhurst University

    • Portland, Oregon is the home of Marylhurst University. Art therapy is part of the Counseling department at Marylhurst. This program trains art therapists to serve community mental health, psychiatric hospitals, day programs and residential treatment programs. Other offerings at Marylhurst are their preparatory Undergraduate programs (bachelor's), Certificate in Art Therapy and Certificate in Counseling.
