Grants for Medical Coding

Although a career in medical coding can be rewarding, becoming certified can be expensive. Fortunately, a variety of educational grants and scholarships are available to students pursuing a career in medical billing and coding. Medical coding scholarships are available from a diverse array of sources, including hospitals, nationwide associations of health information professionals, and local colleges.
  1. Partners Healthcare Medical Coding Loan Forgiveness Program

    • Partners Healthcare offers grant money to health information technology majors pursuing a career in medical coding through the Partners Professional Clinical Coding Loan Forgiveness Program. To be eligible, a student must be an employee at one of the following Massachusetts institutions: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Faulkner Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital or Partners Physicians Organizations. This program provides up to $5,000 of loan forgiveness for one year of employment, or a maximum of $10,000 of loan forgiveness for two years of employment at a participating hospital. A student must be a U.S. citizen in order to participate. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one year of school. The annual application deadlines are June 1 and November 1. Interested students should visit the Brigham and Women's Hospital website to download an electronic application.

    AHIMA Foundation Merit Scholarships

    • The American Health Information Management Association Foundation provides educational grants to medical billing and coding students through its Merit Scholarship Program. AHIMA Foundation Merit Scholarships are awarded annually in the amount of $1,000 for a student pursuing an associate's degree, $1,200 for a student pursuing a bachelor's degree and $2,500 for a student pursuing a graduate degree. To be eligible, a student must be attending a program that is accredited by AHIMA, and must have completed a minimum of six credit hours of coursework prior to applying for the grant. Students must submit applications before April 30 each year to be considered. Electronic applications are available for download at the AHIMA Foundation website.

    Alexandria Technical and Community College Medical Coding Specialist Scholarship

    • Students pursuing certification in medical billing and coding at Alexandria Technical and Community College in Minnesota are eligible to receive educational grant money through the college's Medical Coding Specialist Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded annually for the spring semester in the amount of $200. To be eligible, a student must have a minimum grade point average of at least 3.0, and must have completed or be enrolled for a minimum of 24 credits, at least 15 of which are from Alexandria Tech.
