The Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers several photography evening courses that are approximately two months in length and are available at both a novice and advanced level. Students learn the fundamentals of lighting, composing pictures, studio portraiture and more. The programs utilize professional models in many of the courses where students become familiar with the importance of backgrounds and posing. An introduction to Photoshop workshop teaches students how to manipulate and enhance digital images. For this program, students must bring their own laptop computer with Photoshop software.

Birmingham City University offers several programs in photography, ranging from short personal interest courses to bachelor's degrees in visual communication and post graduate certificates. Creative Self-Development courses in traditional and digital photography are part time evening courses that teach individuals the basics of studio photography, portraiture, film processing and digital manipulation. The Bachelor in Visual Communication is a three-year undergraduate program for individuals interested in a career in photography and other visual media. Students specialize in their particular field of interest beginning in the second year of the program. A one-year postgraduate certificate is available in Freelance Photography. This program is for individuals employed in a related field who wish to acquire specialized training in freelance photography.

Birmingham Metropolitan College offers both diploma and certificate programs in photography. The certificate in photography is a 60 hour part time evening course that instructs students in on-location photography techniques. Students learn in the classroom and then apply newly learned skills at a number of different photography venues. The National Diploma in Photography is for students between the ages of 14 and 19 to become familiar with the skill and technique of traditional and digital photography, including darkroom practice, experimental imagery and documentary photography. The Diploma in Professional Photo Imaging program is one year in length that combines academic learning and practical application. Throughout the program students learn about the importance of lighting, composing images and digital editing techniques.
