The University of Hartford offers students a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in photography. At the introductory level classes introduce basic camera function and film processing methods, such as black and white printmaking, to the student. Intermediate courses include development of color film, manipulation of the negative or printed image and experimentation with large format view cameras. Advanced offerings deal with studio lighting, digital editing and the creation of a student's formal portfolio.
At the University of Connecticut at Storrs, photography is offered as an area of concentration within the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Beginning courses cover basic photographic technique, with special attention paid to the camera as an artistic instrument. As the student progresses within the concentration, printmaking as well as the digital approach to photography is covered. Historical and theoretical courses, both of which will provide context for the student's studio work, are also required.
Western Connecticut State University offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a concentration in photography. A less intensive minor in photography is also an option. For the concentration a series of introductory studio courses (basic photographic technique, printmaking), in addition to a "History of Photography" survey course, are required. More advanced courses are selected as the student progresses in their work.
Bachelor of Fine Arts and Associate of Fine Arts degrees in photography are available at the Paier College of Art in Hamden. The Associate degree entails enrollment in introductory and intermediate studio courses as well as contextual survey courses. A more intensive course of study is required for students seeking a BFA. In addition to the traditional photographic methods offered at the above institutions, Paier College offers elaborate digital technology courses. Digital image correction and other post-processing techniques should be mastered by graduates.
