Massachusetts Photography Schools

A degree in photography allows you to hone your skill as a shutterbug while creating future career opportunities. Whether you're interested in the artistic process of photography--traditional black and white printmaking and experimental studio shoots--or the medium's commercial application, a number of institutions are within the state of Massachusetts that will meet your needs.
  1. The New England Art Institute

    • The New England Art Institute offers an Associate in Science (AS) and Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in photography. An Associate in Science degree emphasizes the commercial aspects of photography, requiring courses like photojournalism, color management and digital post processing. The Institute's Bachelor program focuses on the creative progression of the student. Traditional photographic processes such as darkroom printing and use of large format view cameras are required. Both degrees require the assemblage of a formal student portfolio upon graduation.

    Hallmark Institute of Photography

    • The Hallmark Institute's course catalog represents every facet of photography. Hallmark provides certification in the following areas: photographic art & technique, digital imaging and design & imaging arts. For the aspiring entrepreneurial photographer, commercial courses are also available: advertising strategy, sales promotion and brand management are just a few of Hallmark's offerings. The campus is adjacent the Turner Falls private airport.

Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University

    • Boston University's Center for Digital Imaging Arts offers two types of certification. The Professional Photography Certificate entails an intensive course of study involving digital darkroom work, studio lighting techniques and advanced web design. This certificate prepares students for a career as a commercial, portrait, special event or wedding photographer. The Multimedia for Photographers Certificate gives students the skills to create effective combinations of sound and image. Courses related to audio editing and publishing software are required.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

    • The Massachusetts College of Art and Design offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. Students working toward their BFA will be working with both analog and digital equipment. Both the theory and practice of fine printmaking will be the emphasis of the BFA. The MFA program is decidedly more intensive, focusing on the individual artistic progress of the student. In addition to portfolio building, critical essays of both historical and modern photographic work are regularly required.
