Students desiring an associate degree in digital photography need to either have graduated from high school or obtained a GED. The associate-level degree will require 90 credits. During these hours, you will learn how to use your photography equipment properly, manipulate photographs using both in-camera and Adobe Photoshop (postproduction) techniques, use lighting for photography and apply presentation techniques. Likely, the various styles of photography will also be taught during this degree program: photojournalism, portrait and event photography as well as still life. Students must also complete 24 general education credits in order to receive an Associate of Applied Science degree.
An undergraduate fine arts degree usually stresses the importance of hand-on learning. During your four years, or approximately 120 credit hours, you may study the theory and history of photography in many schools, while other institutions may provide students with a foundation in color theory or design and illustration. Some photography courses you may opt for include black and white photography, color technique, foundations of photography, landscapes and alternative processes. General education courses are required as part of a bachelor's program in photography, but the majority of the curriculum typically focuses on photography; required courses vary from school to school. A final project is typically required in order to complete the Bachelor of Fine Arts program.
Studio courses and experimentation are stressed when acquiring a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Photography. Students utilize their advanced knowledge of photography as they complete various self-guided and assigned projects. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries of their creative ability. MFA projects often adorn the walls of a university-sponsored exhibit as testaments to the skills the university is capable of imparting. Courses for the MFA program may cover topics such as advanced digital imaging, techniques of studio and natural/outdoor lighting, computer imaging and manipulation and advanced color photography. A final project is typically required in order to complete the MFA program. Students obtaining this degree are usually qualified to teach photography at a college level.
Many specialized photography schools exist in which a student studies only photography, much like a vocational education may provide. An Internet search will list schools in your area. You may also find online photography courses that will expand your knowledge of this art form.
