Required Credits for an AA Degree

College students receive an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree after successfully completing their general education requirements. While an AA degree does not signify any sort of specific knowledge or vouch for a student's ability to work in a particular field, it marks the end of the broad general education and the beginning of major specific studies. Even though an AA degree will rarely serve any practical purpose, such as finding work, it is a major milestone in education.
  1. Requirements

    • The requirements for an AA degree vary from school to school, but they generally require that a student has completed 48 to 60 credit hours of general education in specific areas.

    General Education

    • The term general education describes courses that prepare a student for life by assimilating the ideas from a variety for fields. For example, general education courses may include an introduction to literature, philosophy, math and biology.

    • The AA degree is the first degree a college student will receive, which is eventually followed by a bachelor's, master's and finally, a doctoral degree.

    Benefits

    • Some companies will give employees raises in their salary for each degree they accumulate--AA degrees included.
