Required Curriculum for a Bachelor's Teaching Degree

Requirements for a bachelor's degree in education vary from college to college and are often not enough to qualify a degree holder for a teaching position. Most states require an additional teaching certificate earned by passing a state-approved exam.
  1. Types

    • Students seeking a bachelor's degree in education can focus on specific areas, including early childhood, middle childhood, physical education, and special education. Special education students can divide their interest into mild to moderate special needs or moderate to severe.

    Elementary Education

    • Elementary teachers will undertake a general liberal arts education that lets them teach students reading, mathematics, science, language development, and history. This might include other areas like art, music, and physical education.

    Secondary Education

    • Future high school teachers will take education courses like curriculum development and educational theory, but must also focus on areas they would like to teach, whether that be history, math, English, foreign language, or one of the sciences.

    Non-Teaching Classes

    • In addition to subject areas they are likely to teach, future educators may be required to take classes in child psychology, family relations, cultural diversity, or other fields affecting their profession.

    Work Experience

    • Student teaching is frequently required before a college will grant a bachelor's degree. This may mean a semester or more interacting with children in a classroom setting
