Tyler, Texas: The Colleges

Tyler, Texas is approximately 93 miles southeast of Dallas, and, as of July 2009, the city was home to more than 98,000 people. Tyler is home to three public and private colleges. These schools grant certificates, diplomas and undergraduate and graduate degrees in numerous fields, including some occupations the U.S. Department of Labor predicts will be among the fastest-growing in the state from 2006 through 2016, such as computer science, physical therapist assistance and special education.
  1. Tyler Junior College

    • A public, two-year institution, Tyler Junior College is home to 12,000 for-credit students and 20,000 continuing education students, but still has an average class size of only 21 students. The school has associate's degree and certificate programs in 50 different areas, including dental hygiene, health information technology, nursing, physical therapy assisting, computer information systems, bookkeeping, automotive technology, graphic design and video game design. Online classes are available in many majors. The college participates in federal and state loan and grant and veteran's benefit programs. Institutional scholarships and work-study placements are granted as well. The school provides on-campus housing for 650 students. Job placement assistance is available. For athletes, the school has 11 intercollegiate sports teams. Thirty student organizations are also based on campus.

    University of Texas at Tyler

    • Founded in 1971, the University of Texas at Tyler is home to more than 6,100 undergraduate and graduate students. The college offers 90 different undergraduate and graduate programs in arts, sciences, business, technology, education, engineering, computer science, nursing and health sciences. The college offers distance education courses online and through video-based classes. On-campus housing provides residences for 800 students. Each year, the university awards more than $10 million in grants and scholarships. Student loans are also available. The college sponsors 15 men's and women's athletic teams. Seven Greek organizations have chapters on campus.

    Texas College

    • The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church founded Texas College. A historically African-American institution, Texas College is home to approximately 700 students with an average class size of 20. The college offers baccalaureate degrees in 16 different majors, such as art, social work, religion, computer science, education and English. Internships are available in most majors. Financial aid opportunities include federal and state grants and loans, work-study and institutional scholarships. On-campus housing is available. The Job Search Office conducts resume reviews, hosts job-search workshops and conducts mock interviews to help students find employment after graduation. The school has nine sports teams and seven Greek organizations on campus.
