Eastern Oklahoma State College is a public, two-year college with a branch campus in McAlester. The college offers an associate degree in general studies, which allows students to complete general education classes in preparation for transferring to a four-year college or university. Students can also earn associate degrees in psychology, business administration and child development from the college by taking classes solely at the McAlester Campus. The university also offers guaranteed admission programs with Southeastern Oklahoma State University and East Central University, which allow students to complete part of a baccalaureate or master's degree on the McAlester Campus in fields including social work, criminal justice and business administration. Federal and state financial aid is available for eligible students. Job placement assistance is provided.

The Kiamichi Technology Center is a public career college with campuses located throughout Oklahoma, including in McAlester. The school offers adult education certificate programs in automotive services, building and ground technology, information technology and business, nursing, computer-aided drafting, early childhood education, welding, nursing, construction and machining. Classes are held during daylight hours as well as in the evenings and on weekends. Online courses are also offered through Kiamichi Technology Center. The college participates in federal and state loan and grant programs and offers work-study placements to help students offset the cost of tuition.

The American Beauty Institute is a private beauty college based in McAlester. The school is approved by the state of Oklahoma, allowing graduates to qualify for state licensure exams in cosmetology. In addition to covering hair styling, cutting and chemical techniques, the program also includes coursework in wigs, skin care and manicuring. The program lasts for 1,600 hours and includes hands-on experience working in an on-site beauty spa. The school also offers a course just in nail care technology and a training program for cosmetologists that want to become instructors in beauty schools. Students at the school have the opportunity to participate in regional competitions to display their skills in hair-styling. Eligible students can take advantage of federal financial aid.
