Private Nursing Colleges

The field of nursing is a rapidly expanding profession. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections indicate that the number of jobs in the nursing field will increase by 22 percent through 2018. A degree from a private nursing college can be the first step toward a career in this expanding profession. Private nursing colleges typically offer advantages over public institutions, including smaller classes and more individualized attention and instruction from faculty members.

    • The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University is one of the top nursing schools in the nation. The school was ranked No. 15 in the nation by "U.S. News & World Report" in its 2007 rankings of nursing programs. Case Western Reserve is known as one of the top-ranked research institutions in a variety of disciplines. The nursing program offers the Bachelor of Science degree at the undergraduate level and two separate Master of Science degrees in nursing. One is for nurses with a bachelor's degree in the nursing field, and one is a direct-entry program for those entering the field from another profession. The school also offers Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in nursing.

    Nazareth College

    • Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, is a private, independent college offering three nursing programs at the undergraduate level. Students entering the program out of high school can complete the traditional four-year curriculum, leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). The program is also open to students seeking a second bachelor's degree to change careers. Nazareth College also offers a program that allows registered nurses with an associate's degree to complete their education and obtain the bachelor's degree. A third program has been developed by the college to serve the educational needs of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) who would like to complete the bachelor's degree.

    Carson-Newman College

    • Located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Carson-Newman College (CNC) is regularly recognized by publications like "U.S. News & World Report" and "Forbes" as a leading institution in terms of the value of the education it provides. CNC offers undergraduate and graduate degree nursing programs. The college offers several options for the undergraduate nursing program. Aside from the traditional four-year BSN, CNC offers an accelerated program that can be completed in just 2.5 years by taking full-time studies during the summers between the regular academic school years. A fast-track program lasting 16 months is available to students pursuing a second bachelor's degree. The school also offers degree completion programs for LPNs and associate's degree registered nurses. At the graduate level, CNC offers the Master of Science with specializations in the areas of family nursing practice and nurse education.
