Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, the Showcase School of Photography offers six-week sessions to more than 400 students. For amateurs, Digital 101 is recommended, which teaches students the basics of cameras, lighting and equipment. More experienced photographers can enroll in Adobe Photoshop Elements, People and Eye on Composition. In addition to these long commitments, the school features a variety of weekend workshops to give budding photographers a taste of the profession. Among these classes are Pet Photography, Monastery Shoots and Retouching. No prerequisite education is required. However, basic computer skills are necessary.

The Portfolio Center has a unique mission in that it pairs photographers and other artists with an actual client and puts them to work on individual projects. The head of the photography department, Jerry Burns, has a client roster that includes the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Delta Air Lines and Neenah Paper. Under his guidance, students will learn how to collaborate with graphic designers, creative writers and art directors on specific assignments. To apply, potential students must write a 500 to 1000 word statement and send creative samples of their work. Though a four-year college degree is encouraged before enrollment, it is not necessary. However, all potential candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
