The New School for Design at Parsons offers a BFA degree in photography that requires students to select an area of concentration, such as fashion or fine arts. Classes are taught by professional photographers and artists, and students take advantage of Parsons' New York City location to complete internships at magazines and art galleries. Program curriculum includes courses in design, drawing, photography history, and a senior thesis project. In addition to transcripts, recommendations and standardized test scores, applicants to Parsons' photography BFA program submit eight to twelve pieces of artwork.

Northern Michigan University offers a BFA in photography that teaches students how to combine traditional and digital photography techniques. Students have access to traditional facilities with enlargers and processors for developing film. Mac-based computer labs facilitate the production of digital images. Coursework in the photography BFA program covers topics such as digital photography and image manipulation. Students also take a seminar course where they prepare a portfolio. Prospective photography students at Northern Michigan University do not need to complete a portfolio for admission.

Students in the photography concentration take core liberal arts and art foundation classes in drawing, color theory and art history, followed by 39 credits of photography courses.
