The Michigan Academy of Media Arts, in Troy, offers programs in photography, in addition to filmmaking and graphic design. Students may take some classes online in addition to classroom lessons. Students learn the fundamentals of photography, camera systems and controls, lighting and film development. The school considers itself "the best media arts school for entrepreneurs."
Students can earn bachelor's degrees in digital photography from the Art Institute of Michigan in Detroit. Students are taught the fundamentals of digital photography, including composition and design skills. The school also teaches business and communication skills so that students can work as independent contractors or run their own photography studios.
The University of Michigan--Ann Arbor offers photography courses as part of coursework towards a degree in fine arts from the School of Art and Design. The university's Residential College photography studio allows students to study photography and develop film in a dark room.
Ferris State University's Kendall College of Art and Design, in Grand Rapids, offers a bachelor's degree in photography. Students can take courses in digital and film photography, lighting, color, and special topics as taught by the instructor. Scholarships are available.
