The Best Engineering Schools Worldwide

Consumer magazine U.S. News & World Report published a list of the world's best engineering universities in 2010. The ranking categorized each university based on six factors including academic peer review, employer review, student-to-faculty ratio, citations, international faculty and international students. Student reviews and satisfaction weighed in at 40 percent, whereas the community diversity accounted for only 10 percent of the ranking. The following universities represent different world regions and provide exceptional engineering education to students.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Massachusetts Institute of Technology provides undergraduate, graduate and professionals with a project-based and interdisciplinary engineering curriculum. Undergraduates may choose from eight bachelor of science degree programs or create a flexible engineering degree. Graduates select from 15 degree options and may combine their candidacy experience with health sciences, leadership, law or management. MIT's flexible short courses and evening semester programs allow professionals to engage in intensive problem solving and laboratory work and also maintain a work-life balance. Students can study abroad in Portugal, participate in the $100,000 entrepreneurship competition or take courses in baseball science. Employment opportunities are available for students who wish to contribute to the annual $250 million sponsored research.

    University of Cambridge

    • The department of engineering is Cambridge University's largest department, educating about 10 percent of the university or 1800 students. The department is divided into six concentrations which include energy and fluid dynamics, civil and environmental, mechanical, electrical, information technology and manufacturing. The school stresses the importance of sustainable development and life sciences upon which research and seminars are based. Undergraduate students learn engineering fundamentals during their first two years of school. They have to choose a specialty for the remainder of their semesters. Students are capable of conducting research in multidisciplinary teams because of the breadth of knowledge. Doctoral postgraduate programs may be earned through studentships, in which candidates assist professors.
