Filmmaking & Directing Schools

Filmmaking and directing schools prepare students for the lights, cameras and action of a film career. Students in these programs learn the fundamentals of film such as cinematography, directing, screenwriting and producing. In addition, filmmaking and directing schools give students a historical, aesthetic and cultural look at films, as well as the effects that films have on their audiences.
  1. Columbia College Chicago

    • Columbia College Chicago offers an undergraduate major in film and video. Students in this program can focus their studies on areas such as cinematography, directing, screenwriting, animation and audio. Students in the cinematography concentration learn about the aesthetics of lighting and how to use lighting with dramatic action in the film; how to communicate a film's message visually; and how to use different types of cameras. In the directing program, students learn how to use story boards, choose the cast of a film, and organize rehearsals with a film's actors. In the screenwriting program, students learn how to develop short and long scripts, how to adapt story ideas into a script format and how to write character-driven work. Students who pursue the animation program learn about storytelling, traditional and computer animation and how to use timing effectively. In the audio program, students learn about the technical and design elements of audio and films, as well as the physiological impact of audio on a film's viewers.

      Columbia College Chicago also offers a master's degree in film and audio that teaches students about writing, directing and film theory. The program can be completed within 12 to 18 months.

    • Columbia University offers an undergraduate degree in film studies. In the program, students learn about the technical aspects of film, the artistry of film and the international scope of the film industry. The school also offers a master's degree in films studies, where students learn about the use of dramatic narrative and film, how to analyze a script and how to construct a screenplay. Students in the program (which takes 30 credit hours of study to complete) need to write a master's thesis.

    • Regent University offers a bachelor's degree from in cinema and television. The program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers as film directors, producers, screenwriters and editors. The program works to incorporate Christian values into television and film. Students in Regent University's cinema and television program learn about the history of film and television, editing theory, how to work as a producer and how screenwriting is used to tell a story.
