Schools for Film Editing & Acting

Many well-known actors and film editors got their start by going to acting and film school. Actor Henry Winkler and film editor Michael McCusker attended Emerson College; actor Claire Danes attended Yale University; actor Beatrice Arthur attended The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University; and director, producer, screenwriter, editor Joel Coen attended Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, just to name a few.



There are over 21 schools in the United States with acting and film programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Degrees include Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting, Master of Fine Arts in Acting, BA or BFA in Post-Production and Bachelor of Science in Film. Each school also has its own program structure, school philosophy and level of funding for students.
  1. New York Film Academy

    • The New York Film Academy's School of Film and Acting, with campuses in New York City and Los Angeles, offers its students practical on-camera experience, original work, dynamic faculty, filmmaking resources, reel materials short intensive programs and more. The acting school offers cutting-edge actor training and opportunities to work on actual film scenes and productions. Programs and workshops offered include Acting for Film or Musical Theatre. Students in the Acting for Film program will acquire a MFA in Acting or an Associate of Fine Arts in Acting. The film school offers four week or six week film editing workshops. Students will learn digital nonlinear editing on the most up-to-date software. Each day is divided into class time and supervised lab time that allows students to practice their new skills.

    Full Sail University

    • Full Sail University, located in Florida, has been the premier school for the entertainment, media, and arts industry for over 30 years. Students in their film program will acquire a Bachelor of Science degree. Students in the editing labs and suites will learn the post-production process hands-on, by cutting, rearranging and enhancing footage, recording and editing additional dialogue and sound effects. Students will eventually assemble a crew and create a 35mm film that will be shared with classmates, family and industry professionals. Programs are offered at their Florida campus or online.

    Emerson College

    • Emerson College in Boston is a four-year college devoted exclusively to the study of communication and performing arts. Students in The Department of Performing Arts' Acting program (Bachelor of Fine Arts) will move through a four-year sequence of progressively intensive training. Faculty members are seasoned theater professionals from the performing arts community. Students in this program will perfect their skills and develop a framework for understanding both the craft and the vital role that theater plays in the community.

      The Department of Visual & Media Arts offers a BA or BFA in Post-Production that focuses on editing, finishing, and/or construction of projects following a camera or a recorder's acquisition of media materials. Students will have the chance to work with professional, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to fulfill assignments. Professional staff and student employees are available to provide technical support.

      Emerson College also offers Graduate Degrees, International Study & External Programs and Professional Studies.

    Tisch School of the Arts at New York University

    • The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University has used the resources of New York for more than 40 years. Admission to the Tisch School of the Arts is highly selective. The Graduate Acting Program invites 16 actors each year into its three-year actor training program. In the final year of the program, there is an emphasis on tutorial work, specialized dialect work and coaching in connection with productions. The same faculty works with students for two consecutive years. As with many acting schools an audition is required for admission. The Kanbar Institute of Film & Television (undergraduate program) offers courses in film editing. The Graduate Film Program, offered in both New York and Singapore, trains students in telling a cinematic tale. Working professionals are committed to preparing the next generation of filmmakers in an always changing industry. Students will take courses in everything from screenwriting to directing and editing to producing.

    Yale School of Drama at Yale University

    • The Yale School of Drama at Yale University in Connecticut is one of the most prestigious acting schools in the nation, offering Master of Fine Arts, Doctor of Fine Arts, Certificate in Drama and Technical Internship Certificate programs. The school provides training in the classroom and in the production activities for the Yale School of Drama, Yale Repertory Theatre and Yale Cabaret. There are more than 40 productions staged each season for both the public and for the university.

      The faculty at the Yale School of Drama are working professionals from area theaters, bringing their energy, knowledge and experience into their work with the students.
