Find a location. Seek out a commercial or business space in your community to serve as the location for your ultrasound technician training program. Check that the space is large enough and has enough rooms to accommodate classes, skills labs, offices and storage. If you will be leasing the facility, make sure you get approval if you need to make any physical or cosmetic changes to the building.
Create curriculum and policies. Determine what classes your ultrasound technician program will offer and in what sequence students must take the classes to progress through the training program. Write out the policies that will govern students such as the requirements for admission and how student records will be maintained.
Obtain supplies and equipment. Purchase items needed for your ultrasound technician training program such as tables, desks, chairs and computers. Consider what supplies you need for the classroom as well as the lab where students will practice performing ultrasounds on different parts of the body. Ultrasound machines, transducers and exam tables are needed for the skills lab while whiteboards, a projector, computer and other audio visual materials are needed for the classroom where teachers lecture.
Hire personnel. Seek out instructors with previous education and experience working as an ultrasound technician. Check that each person hired is licensed by the state where your school is located. Recruit office staff to assist you in managing your training program and maintaining student records.
Get accredited. Apply for accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs to be recognized as an accredited ultrasound technician training program. Understand that to get a license in this field, many states require attending an accredited school. Determine if you want to seek accreditation from the U.S. Department of Education as well. Doing so allows students to qualify for financial aid to pay for the training.
Recruit students. Market your program to prospective students. Attend college career fairs to find students looking for training. Provide information to high school counselors that they can pass on to their students. Once you have enough students recruited for an initial class, start the training program.
